Navigating New Places, Faces, and Digital Spaces

Description:
This one-hour training focuses on providing parents, caregivers, and guardians with essential information and practical strategies to keep children safe during the summer. As children engage in new activities, attend camps, visit unfamiliar places, and encounter unfamiliar faces, the risk of potential harm increases. This training will cover key safety protocols, tips for identifying safe programs, and strategies for addressing digital safety, bullying, and potential dangers from both adults and peers. Parents and caregivers will leave with the knowledge and tools to create safe environments for their children, whether at a summer camp, on a family trip, or at home.

Objectives:
Recognize Safe Programs and Camps:
-Understand the importance of camp accreditation and what questions to ask to ensure child protection policies are in place.
-Learn how to evaluate child safety training for camp staff, counselor-to-camper ratios, and the presence of policies that minimize risks like one-on-one adult-child situations.
Ensure Children's Safety in Unfamiliar Places:
-Learn strategies to protect children when they attend unfamiliar locations, such as sleepovers, music lessons, sport camps and family vacations.
-Understand the importance of regular check-ins, setting up emergency protocols, and educating children about safe environments.
Safety in Familiar Places:
-Explore practical steps to ensure children remain safe in places they frequent, such as parks and public spaces.
-Learn how to guide children in setting boundaries and the importance of checking in when visiting different areas of a familiar location.
Address Digital Safety:
-Provide guidelines for setting screen time limits, ensuring children understand digital safety rules, and monitoring online behavior to prevent exposure to cyberbullying and inappropriate content.
-Discuss the importance of developing a digital safety agreement and strategies for responding to inappropriate content.
-Discuss a plan and boundaries when children have access to unsupervised screen time.
Empower Children with Safety Knowledge:
-Equip children with essential communication tools to let parents know if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
-Teach children how to recognize safe versus unsafe situations and strangers, and how to respond if they are lost or need help.

By the end of the training, participants will have gained practical tools and resources to safeguard children’s well-being in a variety of settings, from camps and public spaces to online environments.
